Colour Grown Cotton

I've only recently heard of colour grown cotton. It is such a great thing, and I can't believe I haven't heard of it before.
For anyone, like me, who doesn't know what it is here's a brief description.

It was originally used for thousands of years by native american indians to create different colours without the need for dying. Cotton plants can be found in a variety of different colours such as: white, tan, green, yellow, red, and brown. These are naturally occuring colours that cotton grows as, however, because the cotton fibres didn't suit commercial textile machines, white cotton has been the only one used.
Thankfully, it is being used again, which is wonderful news for people with allergies and sensitivities to dyes.

We now stock a variety of organic colour grown cotton baby items, baby blankets, t-shirts and more. Hooray for colour grown cotton!

Premature Babies and Organics

Premature babies are born so tiny, they are very delicate and sensitive. One of the organs most affected by premature birth is the baby’s lungs, as these are one of the last organs to develop. Premmie babies are not yet ready to take over all the functions that the mother’s body is providing. This is why they need special care and breathing support.
So the lungs of a premmie baby may be even more sensitive to chemicals and toxins than a full-term baby. Whether premmie or full-term, your baby needs the least exposure possible to chemicals and toxins. One way of providing this is by using only 100% organic baby products and clothing.

New Stock For Premmie Babies

We are very excited to be adding some new organic products this week from a lovely organic brand called Lapsaky! All week we will be adding new and lovely products for you to check out. Today we have added some really sweet rompers and t-shirts for premature bubbas. For most of these products (except the pink) the colours are not dyed but 'colour grown', which means the cotton is actually grown that colour, eliminating the need for dyes, which is perfect for the sensitive skin of newborn babies. The colours that are dyed are done so by the use of low-impact dye, which allow only the use of non-allergenic, non-metal, and non-carcinogenic pigments. These dyes also have minimal impact on our soil and ground water.

The Importance of Buying Organic

People often ask me whether there is a need for organic clothing thinking once it has been washed, the chemicals will be removed. Many chemicals may be removed by washing, but some such as formaldehyde are chemically bonded to the fabric. It is almost impossible to completely remove formaldehyde from clothing and it is very commonly used in all sorts of clothing. Not only formaldehyde, but also other toxic chemicals.
Many toxins used in the cotton growing process may be removed during the fabric manufacturing process, but many more chemicals and toxins are added back during the dyeing process and garment making, to give the products special properties - eg anti-bacterial, anti-static, wrinkle-free etc. Many of these are dangerous to our health. So organic manufacturing of clothing is important for our health, and especially for the health of a young child.
Organic manufacturing uses natural ingredients in the dyeing process. If imported or travelled any distance, organic clothes may have been sprayed during the transport process. So it is still a good idea to wash before wearing for the first time. These added chemicals, if present, will wash out. You know just by walking through a perfumed area or where someone is smoking, how easily our clothes can absorb odours from the environment.
Another reason for buying organic clothes is to support sustainable farming methods and help protect the environment.

A Little About Deodorant

Most deodorants on the market contain aluminium in some form. They are also antiperspirants, which means they prevent perspiration. Elements such as aluminium are very soluble and absorbed into the body where they may build up in various organs such as kidney, liver and brain. Preventing perspiration by clogging pores is just as dangerous to our health. Perspiration is very important for ridding the body of toxins and if this is prevented by using underarm deodorants, these toxins accumulate in the lymph nodes below the arm pits. A lot of breast cancer occurs in this area.It is important to use a deodorant that does not clog your pores and does not contain aluminium and other chemicals. Spray deodorants are particularly dangerous especially if applied to a large area of your body.

You can find all natural and organic roll-on deodorants that are chemical-free and based on the traditional remedies of bicarbonate of soda to relieve body odour and aloe vera to soothe at: http://www.miessentialorganic.com/deodorants

Healthy Baby

There are so many baby products available these days. It's important to be aware of the ingredients of the products you use on your babies skin. I don't use anything that isn't 100% natural, which means being able to understand every word on the label. Many baby products contain parabens, mineral oil and/or synthetic fragrance which are not good for your baby’s skin.
Approximately 60% of anything you put on a baby's skin can be absorbed into their system, so it makes perfect sense to only use very natural products.
We have a lovely range of organic baby skin care products that nourish and protect your baby's beautiful sensitive skin.
I personally love the 'Baby Bottom Cleanser', it smells sooo lovely!

Nature Bub: Organic Goodness

Nature Bub: Organic Goodness

Organic Goodness

I’m a happy supporter of the organic food movement. Not only for health reasons, but also for the environmental and animal welfare reasons as well. I know it can be really tough buying organics, because of the cost or availability. In the larger cities it is getting much more widely available, even to the point where Supermarkets are offering a decent variety.
As it grows in popularity, we can only hope that prices will drop. However, saying that, I get just as much produce at the organic farmers market as I would get at most supermarkets for around the same price.

Brisbane has a wonderful organic market called Northey Street City Farm on every Sunday. There is a huge amount of variety amongst the stalls, and if you have the time to go amongst them you can find the best bargains. It’s definitely the cheapest option as far as going organic.
For organic meat, I go to The Meating Place in Paddington or Everton Park, (in Brisbane). The have a very good selection of fresh meats without all of the horrible additives that are found in conventional meats. The animals are treated with much more respect as well.
There are also many other organic farmers markets to be found around Australia. Here are a few (please feel free to leave a comment if there are other great one’s you know about):
St Kilda Farmers’ MarketPeanut FarmSt Kilda VIC

South Melbourne MarketCnr Cecil and Coventry StreetsSouth Melbourne VIC

Bondi Junction Organic Farmers’ Market Oxford Street, Bondi Junction NSW

Chatswood Farmers’ Market Cnr Pacific Highway and Centennial Avenue, Chatswood NSW

City Farm Organic Growers’ Market1 City Farm Place, Corner of Lime and Brown Streets, East Perth WA, Every Saturday Morning until 12pm

Mondo’s Saturday Market, 824 Beaufort Street, Inglewood WA, Every Saturday Morning Until 12pm

Living Less Toxic (3)

It’s obviously not just what we put on our body or around house that causes toxins. The food we eat plays a massive roll in the amount of toxicity in our bodies.
Eating a healthy diet, such as minimal sugar, caffeine, alcohol, refined and processed food and trans fats, is the best way to treat your body to optimum health. The way much of the food today is grown and treated can really lessen its nutritional value. Hormones, antibiotics, fertilizers and pesticides on our meat, fruits and vegetables respectively are an extra burden of toxins to our systems when we ingest them. I prefer to eat organic food whenever possible to avoid these extra nasties in my diet.
Studies have shown organic food to be higher in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants than conventional food. It also tastes better too!
It can be hard to lead a perfectly healthy lifestyle and eat all the right things all the time, but balancing it out is the key. Enjoy the naughties in moderation and eat as many fruits and veges as you can (organic where possible) and your body will thank you for it!

Living Less Toxic (2)

HOME…Many of the cleaners available are chock full of synthetic chemicals. I can only think that they must do so much harm to anyone who inhales them, especially with long term exposure. I like the idea that if you can ingest something and not get really sick, then it is a safer option to have around the house. (Not that I’m generally into ingesting cleaning products!).
There are some great cleaning products around now that are much more environmentally sensitive and safe, which can only be a plus especially if you also have children in the house.
I really like Enviro Clean. They make a really strong spray made out of oranges that cleans everything so well. I also use their dishwashing liquid. I think they make other products as well, but I haven’t tried them yet.
For laundry I use Seventh Generation powder, it works really well. Even for stains, you can scrub it on the stain, then leave it overnight to soak before washing. Perfect for my baby's little pooey stains.

I also like the look of Cinderella cleaning products, but I haven’t tried them.
It’s so nice to have a chemical-free clean house.

Living Less Toxic

There are so many toxins in the world, it’s really quite overwhelming when you start to think about all the things that you need to avoid to live a less toxic lifestyle. There are certain things that you can change to at least keep a balance on things.
Over the next few days I'll write about a few of the things that I do to stay a little more clear...

BODY… Using products on your body that aren’t full of synthetic chemicals is a very good idea. Choosing a product that is made with organic or at least natural ingredients is going to be much more beneficial for your skin in the long term. Ingredients from nature will actually feed your skin and give it added nutrients. Be really careful though, and always look at the packaging, lots of products will say ‘natural’ or ‘with added green tea, jasmine' etc, but if you look at the ingredients, it may actually be a cocktail of chemicals, mostly with names that I can’t recognize, and then somewhere in there a little bit of jasmine or some other 'natural ingredient', just to make it sound better. Also beware of fragrances, unless it says ‘pure, or 100% essential oil’, it’s usually a synthetic fragrance. Again, a toxic mix of chemicals.
All of the products we put on our body can either nourish it, or cause a build up of toxins, which could eventually lead to a toxic over-load, and sickness.
Thank goodness there are lots of lovely products that are easily available. Some of my favorites are:

Jurlique: mmmm...so beautiful, but a little on the pricey side. www.jurlique.com.au/ -

Miessence: lots of lovely organic cosmetics, body and household goods -www.miessentialorganic.mionegroup.com

Sukin: Lovely products for a tiny purse- www.sukinorganics.com.au

The Advantages of Fair Trade

I’m so happy to be able to offer products that are not only organic but are also made in environmentally conscience fair trade factories in Egypt, India & Japan. Fair trade means that the people working to make the clothing are being paid a decent price for their work. It also requires decent working conditions and local sustainability. Conventional trade will traditionally discriminate against the poorest, weakest workers, so that they may never get themselves out of poverty. It is an endless cycle, for no matter how hard the person works, they are making next to nothing for a massive days work.
Fair Trade is a wonderful thing to support. You can now find many products that are certified Fair Trade such as:handicrafts, coffee
, cocoa,sugar, tea,bananas,honey, cotton,wine, fresh fruit, chocolate and flowers.
We sell Sckoon baby products which are certified 100% organic cotton and fair trade, so you can be sure that you are doing the best for your baby and the world we live in. To view our products visit :

Other Lovely Fabrics

It’s wonderful to see other natural fabrics starting to be offered, such as bamboo and hemp.
Bamboo is so soft and lovely, it really is a beautiful fabric. I recently bought a beautiful dress and skirt from Gaia Conceptions on Etsy. The dress is made from hemp and bamboo, and the skirt from organic cotton. I gave them my measurements and they made them both for me so quickly. They both fit perfectly too! I’m so happy to find a site that sells such lovely clothing, made so well. And you can choose from heaps of different colours.

The Beauty Of Organic Cotton

The beauty of buying organic clothing is that we are supporting the farmers that are using sustainable farming techniques. Organic cotton farmers do not use any synthetic pesticides, fertilizers or genetically modified cotton. Their practices are a viable choice to actually give back to the Earth, rather than poisoning it. Certified organic cotton is a wonderful choice for clothing and bedding, especially for those with sensitivities, as the toxic residue found in conventional cotton can aggravate a variety of allergies. To find out more information on organic cotton visit : http://www.yarnsandfibers.com/organic-cotton/#

More on Fabrics

Something else surprising and also good to be aware of is that synthetic fabrics are derived from petrochemical or natural gas which actually let off gas for the lifetime of the clothing.
Synthetic fabrics are treated with chemicals in their production. These chemicals can leach into the environment with hazardous effects for water, soil, air and wildlife.
It’s scary to think of the effects of the mass production of clothing made of synthetic fabrics, not to mention the amount of toxins sprayed into the world everyday in the form of pesticides.
Supporting the manufacture of organic clothing is a huge step in helping to create a cleaner world for generations to come.

Tips For A Healthy Lifestyle

WHY ORGANIC CLOTHING?
It is important for parents to realize the hazards that exist in the use of conventionally grown cotton. It is the second-most chemically sprayed plant in the world, after coffee. Many of the pesticides used are potential or known carcinogens, (cancer causing). Fabrics are also often treated with Formaldehyde which is carcinogenic and a neurotoxin.
Repeated washing does not always rid the clothing of the chemicals.
Choosing 100% organic cotton clothing for your baby is a very good idea, as baby's skin is so sensitive and porous. You can find a lovely selection of organic cotton baby clothing and other baby goods at www.naturebub.com
