I love a rubber ducky, but after learning about all the very nasty ingredients they use to make a commercial rubber ducky I've kind of been turned off the poor little things. Also, I really don't like the way they get that yucky ducky black mould on the inside. It comes out into the bath water when you squeeze it, or baby tries to suck it out. Hmmm, not so nice.

Lucky for us, there are now Odd Ducks by Boon. Pretty, individual little ducks for individual little tykes. I think they are very cute...

Delicious Healthy Snacks for Kids

I was trying to find something for my little girl to have for morning tea yesterday and the cupboard was pretty much bare. I did find some popping corn there though, so I made her some. She asked for it to be sweet so I tried using Agave Nectar as it is healthier than sugar....
I'm happy to say it turned out deliciously, unlike some of my other kitchen experiments.

Here's the recipe..

1 TBSP Extra Virgin Olive Oil
1/2 Cup popping corn
2 TBSP Butter (organic)
2 TBSP Agave nectar

Warm oil in stainless steel pan. (Non stick pans are Toxic)
Add corn an then cover it and gently shake the pan continuously until corn is finished popping.
Pour corn into a bowl, add the butter and syrup to the pan, stir. When melted pour over popped corn and stir through til it's all covered.

Yummy!

Delicious Gluten Free Cake

I made the most delicious gluten free cake for my partner's birthday the other day.
Ususally I am a throw-it-all-in-and-see-what-happens kind of cook, which means a lot of my recipes turn out rock hard or too crumbly or just a bit tasteless, however, when it comes to my family's birthday cakes I alway make myself follow the recipe.
I found this delicious recipe for a gluten free orange cake made on almond meal. It was moist and very tasty and very very simple to make. I would recommend using organic oranges as you use the entire orange.

2 navel oranges
5 eggs
250g almond meal
250g raw sugar
1 tsp baking powder

Boil the oranges in enough water that they are submerged for 1 hour.
After that, blend them up into a puree skins and all.
In another bowl blend sugar and eggs until they start to thicken up a bit, the add cooled orange puree. After that mix in the almond meal and the sugar and baking powder.

Put it all in a baking pan and bake for 1 hour on about 180 degrees.

It looked like it wasn't cooked in the centre when I took it out but after leaving it to stand in the tin for half an hour or so it was fine.

I sprinkled a bit of icing sugar over the top just to make it look a bit pretty.

mmmmm...I think I'll have to make another one!

Natural Protection From Nappy Rash

Yummy Afternoon Tea Snack

My daughter and I have been enjoying making yummy organic pikelets lately for her afternoon tea. They are so quick to make and so tasty!

Mix:
1 Cup organic wholemeal self-raising flour
1 Tablespoon organic raw sugar
1 egg
3/4 cup of organic milk

Mix it all up with a spoon and pour it into the frying pan that's been greased with melted butter.
Wait until there are little bubbles in the pikelets and then flip them.

For something different you can add passionfruit or blended banana for a different spin.

Organic Toys For Babies

We know that babies love to put things in their mouth whether it is a teething toy, a rattle, a cuddly toy or just bedding and clothing. Therefore it would be nice to know for certain that what they are sucking on will not harm them in any way. I have tried several times to purchase non-toxic baby toys in department stores and toy shops, and I have come away empty handed. The products are nearly all made in China (even if imported from elsewhere) and there is no assurance on the product packaging that the products do not contain any toxic ingredients or toxic paint.
I’m sure some would be safe but there is no way of knowing.

No Sugar, So Why So Sweet?

Yesterday I dropped my partner and daughter off at the airport for a little holiday at Great-Nanas. On my way home it happened to be the same time when all the school kids are walking to school. Being rush hour I was stranded at an intersection for quite some time while lots of little groups of high school kids walked past me on their way to school. What really suprised me was that every single one of them was holding some type of soft drink mostly in a 1.25L container, or energy drinks. I couldn't believe that this is the way kids are starting their day at school.

Today as I was walking my little baby around the park I spotted a bus with a huge can of softdrink on it with the words no sugar, and I thought hmmmm......

So what do they use if they aren't using sugar? Honey, stevia, rapadura??
No, try Aspartame and/or Acesulfame Potassium (K). These little ingredients are actually chemicals that are incredibly sweet to the taste buds but also very toxic to the body.
Studies have shown that Aspartame (also known as Equal, NutraSweet and a variety of other names) may cause a number of very concerning problems including: Birth Defects , Cancer (Brain Cancer), Diabetes , Emotional Disorders and Epilepsy/Seizures.

People are generally using "diet" products such as diet soft drinks, artificial sweeteners in their tea/coffee etc. in an effort to lose weight. With so many diet options on the market out there it makes you wonder why obesity is only becoming a larger problem.
This little blurb from Health For You explains why that could be:
Aspartame breaks down into three components: 1. Methanol. This is poisonous alcohol. In the body, methanol breaks down into formaldehyde, which is a poison. 2. Phenylalanine. This decreases the amount serotonin in your brain, which leads to mood swings (depressions) and an increased appetite! That is why aspartame is one of the main causes for the current obesity epidemic. 3. Aspartic acid. This is a neurological toxin comparable to MSG.

It makes me worry for the future health of all those children who are consuming these artificial ingredients every morning on their way to school.

Sophie The Giraffe

I haven't bought many toys for my baby, but there is one toy which I recommend to any new parents... Sophie the Giraffe, she is French and has been made since the mid 1900's.

Lylah has enjoyed chewing, sucking, bending and squishing Sophie since she was about 2 months old. Now that she is 7 months old, Sophie still seems to be the favourite.

The beauty of little Sophie is that she is free from all the nasty ingredients that seem to afflict so many of the baby products on the market as she is made out of 100% natural rubber. She is the perfect shape for tiny hands to hold as well.

She has helped me out so many times over the last few months, and now that Lylah's teeth are on their way, I'm sure she will continue to be a wonderful companion in the months ahead.

The Nappies For Me

Ok, maybe not for me (thank goodness), but for my baby. In my decision making, I always think of the health and environmental impact before making a choice. The good old nappy saga has been going on for decades now. Cloth or disposable?

Well, with my first baby I used cloth at home and Naturebaby Care nappies when we went out, and at night. This worked for me, as I didn't mind doing the washing (with natural detergents), and I was happy to be using a disposable nappy that was much safer both for my baby and our Earth.

Six years later, and hooray, there are even more great products out there to try. I've discovered Moltex Eco nappies which are made in Holland I believe. They are the most environmentally friendly nappy available in Australia and have recieved awards for this reason. They are actually compostable and break down in 8-10 weeks, while all the other millions of conventional disposable nappies from the last 50 years are still very much in tact in land fill. This alone is enough to make me a happy mama.

There are also health benefits for my baby as well. Moltex nappies contain no perfumes, lotions, antioxidants, TBT, chlorine or latex all of which to me, are toxins on my little baby's beautiful skin.

I noticed a couple of consumer reviews of these nappies, all positively glowing. A couple of mothers even said that their babies nappy rash disappeared when they switched to Moltex.

They are more expensive, which can be hard some weeks for me, and if that is the case I will buy a packet to use at night (lasts 40 nights so $1/night), and then I buy the Naturebaby Care for during the day, as they are much cheaper.

I also LOVE my little Baby Bee-hinds cloth nappies. They are sooo soft and really absorbant. I definitely recommend them as the best pre-made cloth nappy I have tried.

I just think it's sad more people don't think outside the square and discover alternatives that are going to help make the world more habitable for their grand-children.

Wedding Footprints

Lots of my friends seem to be getting married lately and it's made me wonder what sort of footprint weddings leave on the Earth. Is it something we should be looking at trying to make more eco friendly? If there are 100000 weddings a year in Australia alone it will definitley impact on the environment.

Here are some things we can do to lessen the damage...

Instead of buying a new dress where the fabric will have been sprayed with pesticides in the growing and many other chemicals in the production, how about borrowing one, have one made with organic fabics, buy an eco wedding dress (there are some beautiful websites selling them now) or have a vintage/secondhand one altered to fit you.

Back To School Lunches

My little girl is back to school tomorrow, so we decided to make some easy-peasy and delicious banana bread for her to take for morning tea.
It's a wonderful way to use up those banana's that get too soft to eat...
Being one of the creators of Nature Bub , I also love to eat organic food too, so most of these ingredients are organic in my cupboard.

2 cups flour
3/4 cup sugar
3 mashed up bananas
1/2 cup butter
2 eggs (organic & free range)
1 tsp soda
4 TBS buttermilk
pinch of salt

Cream butter and sugar, then add bananas. Stir in eggs.
Put the soda into the buttermilk.
Slowly stir in flour and salt and then add the buttermilk.
Bake for about an hour in oven at 175 degrees.

Lovely Lunches

I love it when I come across really great products for my family.
A few weeks ago, my mum bought my daughter a lunchbox made from Biome called 'Lunchbots'. They are 100% food grade stainless steel and seem to be making my mornings much easier when making school lunches. I'm not quite sure why it seems easier, but I feel like I am making her a much more nourishing morning tea since I have been using it.
We have a yellow one called "Pico" which has two seperate compartments which I fill with lovely healthy snacks for morning tea, such as organic ham, cheese, hummous, and vege sticks or fruit.
It's wonderful because I know I am looking after my childs health by giving her lunch in a container with toxins that may leach out into her food, and helping to reduce the mass landfill of plastics which break down so slowly they may still be completely whole when my grandchildren are born.
I will definitely be buying a couple more of these!

Nourishing Traditions Blog

I love Sally Fallon's cookbook 'Nourishing Traditions' and today I came across a blog by Kim Knoch called 'The Nourishing Cook'. Kim aims to cook all 773 Recipes from the book by the 31st of December 2011. So far she has cooked 39. All I can say is Wow, what a mission!
The recipes in Sally's cookbook are so beautifully nourishing, although some can seem a little overwhelming with ingredients such as Créme Friache and other fermented milk products which need to be made regularly (rather than store bought), as they are ingredients in many of her recipes. But if you are organised and get into a rhythm with these, then you can enjoy the absolute beauty and health of these wonderful recipes.
I'm looking forward to reading her blog and seeing the recipes I haven't yet tried to make.

Dangers of Fire Retardants

I have been looking into buying a cot mattress for my little baby and have been suprised to find more dangers to be aware of when buying things for my precious bubba. Fire Retardants are sprayed on many synthetic fabrics to stop them melting if exposed to flames, that includes bedding and clothing (including polyester pyjamas), baby seats, furniture, computers and much more. These fire retardants are made up of highly toxic chemicals which studies have found can cause all sorts of horrific health problems including immune suppression, hormone disruption, learning and memory problems, behavioral changes, and cancer. As well as fire retardants, there are also other chemicals added in the manufacturing of bedding, so to me it seems crazy to have my little girl sleeping and breathing in a toxic coctail of chemicals for so many hours a day.
I'm looking into organic cotton matresses at the moment, to put my mind at ease when I put my bubba to bed at night. These seem quite expensive but at least I'll have the peace of mind of knowing that my baby isn't breathing in toxins that could easily be avoided. Along with lovely organic pyjamas I hope to give her the healthiest start to life.
I'd love to hear from anyone who knows a good non-toxic mattress that's available in Australia.

I think anyone who has had a baby would know the lovely feeling of happiness that sits comfortably in your belly when you think of your little baby. Lylah is such a sweet little happy bubba who has her whole little family (including her 5 year old big sister), totally smitten.

Although there are things in my life that I can't do that I'd really love to because I have to care for my children, nothing could come close to the feeling of pure, delightful and absolute love I feel for my little girls.

There are so many dangers and toxins out there, it can be overwhelming trying to lead a healthy lifestyle. The more you read the more difficult it becomes, as it can feel as if everything out there is toxic and harmful to our health. Sorry to be the bringer of bad news but I think it's really important to know about this little thing called BPA or Bisophenol A. It can be found in many of the things that we use for our children including baby bottles and plastic drinking bottles as well as a lining in tinned food. It is an industrial chemical used to make polycarbonate plastic and epoxy resins, for use in lightweight plastics that are both tough and heat resistant.
BPA has been linked to many health issues such as to breast and prostate cancer, diabetes, heart disease and hyperactivity.
Some countries have already banned the use of it in baby bottles although sadly Australia isn't one of them. Thankfully there are alternatives available which are much safer. A baby bottle company called 'Green To Grow' make a great range of baby bottles. There are also the old glass bottles which are very safe, (but don't freeze them).
For older children there are now many places selling stainless steel water bottles, such as Eco Tanka, Cheeki and Sigg.
It's hard to avoid everything toxic out there, but there are some things that just require a decision to stop using them, and for our children's safety it's a very simple decision.

Today I stumbled upon a wonderful article with lots of information for any new parents. Such as the best first foods, as well as when to introduce certain food into a babies diet so as not to cause allergies later in life.
I have the Nourishing Traditions cookbook by Sally Fallon, which is mentioned in the article, and I do recommend it to anybody who may be looking for a healthier way of life. Although for some people it may be a challenge (with time) to make some of the recipes from scratch. There is also some valuable information in it about feeding babies in her book as well.

Last year I went to a conference and saw a lady called Cyndi O'meara speak. She was very knowledgeable and her beliefs about health and diet were very much the same as mine. It was so refreshing to be able to listen to someone speak about living a healthy lifestyle and actually agree with everything they say. There is so much contradicting information out there today, some people believe this others believe that, it can be hard for people to really know whether they are making the right choices.
Cyndi has written a book called "Changing Habits Changing Lives" which is very informative and easy to read. It's great for anybody who wants to make better food choices but isn't sure how to begin, and it's set out in such a way as to not be overwhelming at all.
I really recommend it to anybody who would like to live a healthier lifestyle, by just changing a few simple things you can make a huge difference to your feelings of energy and vitality.

I've only recently heard of colour grown cotton. It is such a great thing, and I can't believe I haven't heard of it before.

For anyone, like me, who doesn't know what it is here's a brief description.

It was originally used for thousands of years by native american indians to create different colours without the need for dying. Cotton plants can be found in a variety of different colours such as: white, tan, green, yellow, red, and brown. These are naturally occuring colours that cotton grows as, however, because the cotton fibres didn't suit commercial textile machines, white cotton has been the only one used.

Thankfully, it is being used again, which is wonderful news for people with allergies and sensitivities to dyes.

The Importance of Buying Organic

People often ask me whether there is a need for organic clothing thinking once it has been washed, the chemicals will be removed. Many chemicals may be removed by washing, but some such as formaldehyde are chemically bonded to the fabric. It is almost impossible to completely remove formaldehyde from clothing and it is very commonly used in all sorts of clothing. Not only formaldehyde, but also other toxic chemicals.
Many toxins used in the cotton growing process may be removed during the fabric manufacturing process, but many more chemicals and toxins are added back during the dyeing process and garment making, to give the products special properties - eg anti-bacterial, anti-static, wrinkle-free etc. Many of these are dangerous to our health. So organic manufacturing of clothing is important for our health, and especially for the health of a young child.
Organic manufacturing uses natural ingredients in the dyeing process. If imported or travelled any distance, organic clothes may have been sprayed during the transport process. So it is still a good idea to wash before wearing for the first time. These added chemicals, if present, will wash out. You know just by walking through a perfumed area or where someone is smoking, how easily our clothes can absorb odours from the environment.

Most deodorants on the market contain aluminium in some form. They are also antiperspirants, which means they prevent perspiration. I’m a happy supporter of the organic food movement. Not only for health reasons, but also for the environmental and animal welfare reasons as well. I know it can be really tough buying organics, because of the cost or availability. In the larger cities it is getting much more widely available, even to the point where Supermarkets are offering a decent variety.
As it grows in popularity, we can only hope that prices will drop. However, saying that, I get just as much produce at the organic farmers market as I would get at most supermarkets for around the same price.
Brisbane has a wonderful organic market called Northey Street City Farm on every Sunday. There is a huge amount of variety amongst the stalls, and if you have the time to go amongst them you can find the best bargains. It’s definitely the cheapest option as far as going organic.
For organic meat, I go to The Meating Place in Paddington or Everton Park, (in Brisbane). The have a very good selection of fresh meats without all of the horrible additives that are found in conventional meats. The animals are treated with much more respect as well.

It’s obviously not just what we put on our body or around house that causes toxins. The food we eat plays a massive roll in the amount of toxicity in our bodies.
Eating a healthy diet, such as minimal sugar, caffeine, alcohol, refined and processed food and trans fats, is the best way to treat your body to optimum health. The way much of the food today is grown and treated can really lessen its nutritional value. Hormones, antibiotics, fertilizers and pesticides on our meat, fruits and vegetables respectively are an extra burden of toxins to our systems when we ingest them. I prefer to eat organic food whenever possible to avoid these extra nasties in my diet.
Studies have shown organic food to be higher in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants than conventional food. It also tastes better too!
It can be hard to lead a perfectly healthy lifestyle and eat all the right things all the time, but balancing it out is the key. Enjoy the naughties in moderation and eat as many fruits and veges as you can (organic where possible) and your body will thank you for it!

Living Less Toxic (2)

HOME…Many of the cleaners available are chock full of synthetic chemicals. I can only think that they must do so much harm to anyone who inhales them, especially with long term exposure. I like the idea that if you can ingest something and not get really sick, then it is a safer option to have around the house. (Not that I’m generally into ingesting cleaning products!).
There are some great cleaning products around now that are much more environmentally sensitive and safe, which can only be a plus especially if you also have children in the house.
I really like Enviro Clean. They make a really strong spray made out of oranges that cleans everything so well. I also use their dishwashing liquid. I think they make other products as well, but I haven’t tried them yet.
For laundry I use Seventh Generation powder, it works really well. Even for stains, you can scrub it on the stain, then leave it overnight to soak before washing. Perfect for my baby's little pooey stains.
I also like the look of Cinderella cleaning products, but I haven’t tried them.
It’s so nice to have a chemical-free clean house.

Living Less Toxic

There are so many toxins in the world, it’s really quite overwhelming when you start to think about all the things that you need to avoid to live a less toxic lifestyle. There are certain things that you can change to at least keep a balance on things.
Over the next few days I'll write about a few of the things that I do to stay a little more clear...

BODY… Using products on your body that aren’t full of synthetic chemicals is a very good idea. Choosing a product that is made with organic or at least natural ingredients is going to be much more beneficial for your skin in the long term. Ingredients from nature will actually feed your skin and give it added nutrients. Be really careful though, and always look at the packaging, lots of products will say ‘natural’ or ‘with added green tea, jasmine' etc, but if you look at the ingredients, it may actually be a cocktail of chemicals, mostly with names that I can’t recognize, and then somewhere in there a little bit of jasmine or some other 'natural ingredient', just to make it sound better. Also beware of fragrances, unless it says ‘pure, or 100% essential oil’, it’s usually a synthetic fragrance. Again, a toxic mix of chemicals.
All of the products we put on our body can either nourish it, or cause a build up of toxins, which could eventually lead to a toxic over-load, and sickness.

It’s wonderful to see other natural fabrics starting to be offered, such as bamboo and hemp.
Bamboo is so soft and lovely, it really is a beautiful fabric. I recently bought a beautiful dress and skirt from Gaia Conceptions on Etsy. The beauty of buying organic clothing is that we are supporting the farmers that are using sustainable farming techniques. Organic cotton farmers do not use any synthetic pesticides, fertilizers or genetically modified cotton. Their practices are a viable choice to actually give back to the Earth, rather than poisoning it.
